How Intermittent Fasting Can Help You Lose Weight

What you eat is the most important factor in a safe and sustainable weight loss plan, but it’s not the only factor. How and when you eat can also play a role in losing and keeping off unwanted pounds.

Starvation diets aren’t effective and can make it harder for you to lose and keep off weight in the long run. Intermittent fasting consists of short periods of a limited or no-calorie intake, followed by well-balanced meals on certain days or a specific time window.

Are you looking for a safe and effective weight loss plan? At East Bay Wellness we offer a number of customized plans that incorporate intermittent fasting. Here's how this technique can help you lose weight and keep it off.

How intermittent fasting works

There are a few ways to practice intermittent fasting. Some people choose alternate day fasting, which consists of a day where you would only consume a minimal amount of calories, followed by eating unrestricted meals the next day. Whole day fasting is when you choose one or two days per week to fast completely or consume approximately 25% of your daily caloric requirement.

If skipping food for an entire day sounds too extreme, you can try a time-restricted fasting plan. With this approach, you eat your meals within a designated time frame every day and then fast for the rest of the day. You can repeat the process every day if you like, or just a few days per week.

Known as the 16/8 method, this type of intermittent fasting allows you to eat several balanced meals and even a few snacks, as long as you eat all your meals within an eight-hour window on fast days. This is one of the more popular and common forms of intermittent fasting and a great way to get started and try it out without drastically altering your lifestyle or disrupting your meal schedule.

The potential benefits of intermittent fasting

Intermittent fasting has grown in popularity over the last few years, thanks to potential benefits like:

More research and testing are needed to fully understand how it benefits the human body (and mind), but more and more people are turning to intermittent fasting to lose weight and improve their quality of life.

If you have underlying health issues like diabetes, an eating disorder, if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, or using certain medication, consult your primary care physician to see if intermittent fasting is appropriate and safe for you.
